Connie Howse


Connie Howse was recently interviewed by PBS for the documentary “A Wider World.” A tireless advocate for the autistic, she helped save the internationally-recognized center-based program for the autistic, Burger Center, from closure.  She has also spoken at conferences and before school boards on educational issues related to autism.  An accomplished performer and violinist with 23 years of teaching experience, she has successfully utilized music therapy with special needs students and lectured on the healing powers of music.  She is a graduate of Spring Arbor University, trained in Psychology and Music.  She and her husband of 35 years, Ken, and their four sons (one of which, Scott, has autism), reside in Livonia, Mich.

Scott Howse


Scott Howse, diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 1/2, has accumulated an impressive list of accomplishments in spite of his disability.  He was the first-ever student-athlete with autism to be named Academic All-American at the Junior College Level for Schoolcraft College in Livonia in 2011.  His story was recently featured in the PBS documentary “A Wider World,” focused on individuals with disabilities, shown nationwide and featured in Autism Research Institute's newsletter.  He was also named "Most Valuable Runner" in 2008 on his community college cross-country team.
